Assembling A Nuovo Gran Sport Rear Derailleur

This may seem to be a strange thing for my blog, but I have recently sold a Nuovo Gran Sport rear derailleur to a fellow in France. To save postage I have removed the cages so it would lay flat in a padded envelope. This blog is for the buyer to re-assemble the rear derailleur.

When you unpack the derailleur it will be in two parts; the body and cages.

In order to re-assemble the derailleur you will need a small flat head screw driver and a 15mm or small adjustable wrench. The first thing you will need to do is remove the slotted pin on the side of the lower spring housing cover as shown below.


Now turn the body over and you will see the nut for a presta stem screwed onto a threaded stud. This nut is not part of the derailleur, it is just being used to keep it together.


The threaded stud is the lower part of the lower pivot bolt that passes through the lower spring housing. Take a look below at how it goes together at the top, so if you push it out, you can push it back in again. There is a slot on the side of the housing. First see the tip of the lower spring resting at the base of the slot. The top of the spring it bent at a 90 deg angle and held in place by a black bushing that has a vertical lip that fits into the slot. Make sure if you push out the pivot bolt and bushing you re-install it with the lip in the slot, or the bushing will not seat properly.

Below is the bottom of the spring housing with the presta nut removed (don't do this yet, it is just instructional). You will notice I am pinching the bottom of the housing and the top of the pivot bolt together, this is the best way to remove the presta nut. You will also notice there are two holes in the bottom of the housing; the bottom of the lower pivot spring extends out one of these holes and I marked the one I usually use.




Now take a look at the cages above. You will see that the cage has a circular raised area on one side with a threaded hole and 4 smaller holes around the threaded hole ; one of the holes is marked with white.

The way this derailleur goes together is the part of the spring that extends out of the spring housing cover, also goes into the marked hole of the cages. Then the two are held together by the pivot bolt screwed into the center threaded hole. When you are ready to assemble the two parts have the 15mm or adjustable wrench handy.


Now remove the presta nut by pinching the housing cover and the top of the pivot bolt together as below while unscrewing the presta nut. Once this has been done pick up the cages and insert the extended portion of the spring into the marked hole in the cages, laying the cages flat against the end of the housing cover while keeping pressure on the top of the pivot bolt and the back of the cages.

Once your holding it together, slide a wrench over the top of the pivot bolt, center the threaded stud over the threaded hole in the cages try and screw the bolt into the threaded hole of the cage. If for some reason, the pivot bolt gets pushed out or the housing pops off, don't fret, there is a learning curve to this. Just push the pivot bolt back in, re-position the housing cover and try again.


Once the pivot bolt's threads get started, screw the bolt in until it stops and give it enough torque that it shouldn't come apart. Now that the derailleur is together, turn the cage counter clockwise about 90 deg and make sure it is not binding. If you put it together properly, the hole for the stop pin should be facing in the direction of the lower pulley (see upper photo). If there is no binding and the stop hole is in the right place, hold the body stationary and turn the cage 180 deg counter clockwise, until the stop pin hole is on the right side of the body.



Once the cage has been rotated 180 deg and the stop pin hole is on the right side, screw in the pin.

Once the pin has been installed, your done!

Campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport Derailleur w/ 28T cog

After writing Vintage Cyclross Bike (VCB) VCB 1.0 and VCB 2.0 , I need to craete a VCB 1.5. Though I'm keeping the seat and brakes, I reverting back to the Gran Sport rear derailleur. Below you will see how I managed to tweak a Gran Sport derailleur (rated at 26T cog)to work flawlessly with a 28T cog.

One of the most frustrating thing about the Nuovo Record era was the 26T limit of the Nuovo Record and Gran Sport rear derailleurs. There were even attempts of varying success at grafting on a larger cage to facilitate using larger cogs. This not to say there were not other work arounds; shortening the chain and moving the wheel forward in the dropouts met with varying levels of success. This is the result of a standard Nuovo Gran Sport on a 28T cassette with out attempting any mitigating factors. You will see it will shift, but not so one would trust it would work. In the follow-up video "Camapgnolo Nuovo Gran Sport w/ 28T cog" Part 2 we will find a more elegant solution.



In Camapgnolo Nuovo Gran Sport w/ 28T cog Part 1, we saw that a Nuovo Gran Sport rear derailleur does not handle a 28T very well; this is not a surprise as they along with the Nuovo Record are only rated at 26T. In this video I have grafted a Super Record backplate (also called the outside plate)on my Gran Sport derailleur. The Super Record rear derailleur of the Nuovo record era, was nothing more than Nuovo Record derailleur with some visual changes and titanium pivot bolts. However, the change to a 28T cog was accomplished by simply raising the lower pivot on the back plate, thus lowering the jockey pulley. As you can see this new arrangement not only works well with a 28T, but could probably accommodate an even larger cog.



Okay, this may make little sense as it is probably easier to get a Super Record derailleur than to find just the backplate. However, you may not want to use a Super Record on a particular build, but want a better working Gran Sport derailleur. The Super Record backplate also solves the Achilles heal of the Gran Sport rear derailleur. Both the Nuovo Record and Super Record have a 1/4" thick aluminum back plate; the Gran Sport has a ridiculously thin steel back plate. The aluminum back plate is certainly stronger also about 2 to 3 times as stiff. The result is the Gran Sport back plate can bend with just a moderate amount of pressure, say leaning it against something. This leads to the fact that I have 1) never seen a Gran Sport rear derailleur that does not have a back plate that needs some truing and 2) It is very common for Gran Sport rear derailleurs to get bent so badly that they get sucked into the rear wheel. I learned this with the first Gran Sport derailleur I bought; yes it got sucked. I also found another at an LBS that was all bent up in the same manner.

Reloading a Vintage Campagnolo Brake Carrier



Currently I have a set of Campy Gran Sport brakes. I bought them for a bike project and it turned out 1) the reach was too short for the rear and 2) they had recessed pivot bolts and my frame needed standard pivot bolts. The recessed pivot bolt problem could have been dealt with, but the reach issue was a deal breaker; I needed another brake-set with longer arms. I am now left with a brake-set I can not use, which is prime ebay material.

The brakes-set sat on ebay for 2 weeks and nothing, not even a question. The brake-set was in very good condition with one glaring exception; the pads were shot. A set (4) of Campy pads cost about $35, which will eat away a good part of my profit (actually increase my loss), but it appeared it will be necessary to sell the brakes. Old style Campy pads are usually pretty easy to replace. First you need to pull out the old pads, this can usually be accomplished with a pair of pliers.

Once the pad is out, you simply slip the new brakes in from the open side (Campy carries hold on the pads from three sides or retainer walls. The rear is left open, which is not an issue as long as the open part of the carrier faces the rear or opposite tire rotation, so the rotation of the tire doesn't pull the pad out.

As I'm sure you noticed, I said "Old style Campy pads are usually pretty easy to replace." This is not true for Gran Sport carriers. The reason is, at the time Gran Sport was bottom of the line race components. Campy reduced the manufacturing costs of the Gran Sport brakes by less polish, a linkage vs cam brake release, the carriers are galvanized steel (not chromed), the lack of a wheel guide, and the retainer walls are on all four sides, meaning the pads are not meant to be removed and re-installed. Perhaps this was not a big deal from 1974 to 1984, but today these filled carriers are no where to be found. But even back in the old days, the less expensive option of replacing just the pads led to bending the rear pad retainer so a new pad could be inserted. Due to the poor grade of metal used to make the Gran Sport carriers, this retainer wall usually broke off when you tried to bend it back into place. Since the Nuovo Record brakes were already make without a rear retainer, it simply made sense to cut/grind it off.

I decided to grind the rear retainer off prior to removing the old pads; this gave me additional access to the pad when removing it. I pulled out the pads, primarily with pliers, but in a few cases the pad split is half, or started to, so I used a screwdriver to help remove the pad. Once the pad was out I was able to clean up the area where I cut/ground off the the rear retainer wall.After that it was an easy job to rub the pads with alcohol and slide them in; if you are doing this, make sure you remember to reinstall the brake retainer bolt before sliding in the pad. Also, some pads have different wiring on the them. The older pads have "CAMPAGNOLO"" on one side and "BREV. INTER." The pads brakes are usually positioned so CAMPGNOLO is on the top, meaning the pads will have to be installed, 2 with the open end facing forward and two facing back. If you need to remove a pad that you plan on reusing, best to pry it out with a screwdriver than pull it out with pliers. While a newly installed pad will usually pull right put, the pliers will leave jaw marks and their always the possibility that you may unknowingly split part of the pad, causing it to tear off at a later time.

After that I simply reinstalled the brake retainers and put them up on ebay for another try. Since there's really nothing else I can do, the brakes will now remain on ebay until they sell.

Edit: Well they finally sold a short time afterwards and I lost about $35 on the deal; but it was still money in my pocket vs nothing.

Vintage Cross Bike 2.0

Well I'm already changing the vintage cyclocross. First I have switched out the saddle to a Turbo; I'm really warming up to these old saddles. The main problem I have run into now, is I need lower gears. I will not be competing with this bike, but the fire-roads around here are steep hard-pack so there is a lot of seated grinds for literally miles. Since I am using a Nuovo Gran Sport crankset I am stuck with a 42T CR in front. The Nuovo Gran Sport derailleur pretty much maxes out at 26T; I need bigger. As I mentioned in my previous blog entry, my original cogset was a 6 speed Uniglide with a 24T largest cog; my first thought was to change the 24T to a 26T, but then I ran across a cassette I could use (see below) with a 28T, so I need another derailleur. The next generation derailleurs (Corsa or C-Record) were made for larger cogs. The record takes a 28T, the Chorus with an adjustable b angle and slant parallelogram option takes a 32T (I have one of these but I'd rather not use it) and Athena (which a also have) with an adjustable b angle takes a 30T (the adjustable b angle allows you to position the upper pulley in relation to the largest cog). There is also the same genre sport level Victory derailleur with an adjustable b angle that takes a 30T (this is one of the differences from Triomphe with no b angle adjustment that took a 28T). I've looked at the Rally (Gran Sport long cage) derailleurs but I really don't like the way they work.

The bike is built mainly around Nuovo Record genre including the Triomphe brakes, which are a Gran Sport copy but easier to find in standard length). Speaking of the brakes the Triomphe arrived and have been mounted. I was also surprised to see that one of the brakes (the rear) had a recessed pivot DOOO! Here we have an NOS set of brakes with different style pivots! Well, fortunately I still had the standard set of pivots I bought to convert the Gran Sport brakes before I determined the arms were too short. Even though I only needed to change one pivot, I switched out both for the purpose of symmetry. Oh yes, and now I know that the brake pivots for Nuovo Record and Super Record, also fit Triomphe and I guessing Victory brakes as well.

I decided to install the Athena derailleur with a 28T cassette.

There were very few 6 speed cassettes made, most were made by Suntour and none in Shimano HG (see below); if you find one they are usually very expensive. What I used was the 5 cogs attached to each other from a 7 speed cassette.
A Shimano 6 speed freehub is a Uniglide and 7 speed is a Hyperglide (HG). Normally one would attach a seven speed cassette with a 13T spacer and an 11T end piece with a lockring with HG. The last five cogs that are attached are a 18-28T, meaning if all the 7 cogs were used together you would have a 11-28T cassette. The Uniglide (UG) came as separate cogs and spacers, while the HG came as a cassette where most the cogs are riveted or screwed together. The UG locked the cogs on the freewheel using the threaded end of the freewheel and with a 13T threaded cog (one issue with the Uniglide was the lack of a 11T 0r 12T cog). The advantage of the middle freehub in the above photo, (Uniglide Compatable) is you can use either UG or HG cogs and either the 13T UG lockring or the HG 13T/11T/lockring system. However I have the proprietary Uniglide freehub, which is not compatible with HG cassettes; the reason is the addition of a wide spline designed to keep the Integrated Glide (IG) cogs lined up in a predetermined alinement (the ramps cut into the cogs aid in shifitng as long as they are lined up properly). Due to a lack of a wide spline, HG cogs or combined cassettes will not fit on a UG freehub. However, since the wide spline is created by narrowing the adjacent spine, all that is necessary is to grind off 1/3 of the wide spline in the cassette and it will slide right on (I did this first with a hacksaw to create a squared off edge on the spine and then a Dremil tool to remove the rest of the metal; and viola! A 5 speed cassette 15-28T and a 13T threaded lockring, to create a 6 speed 13-28T cassette! I rode this combination up a steep fire road and the 28T cog is plenty low for any purpose I can imagine (any lower and you would be able to walk faster).


The question to me is, does it fit the bike? My other choice is tracking down a Victory derailleur (there is currently a fairly pricey long cage version on ebay). I'm kinda stuck on the Victory right now, but I could probably live with the Athena. I'm not really concerned with function at this point as they all work well enough for what I have planned.

I have also customized the shifters. The common Nuovo Record shifters for braze-ons and downtube clamps have a plate at the end held down with a screw. The Gran Sport on the other hand have a larger turban style tightener but they are not made for braze-ons (at least I have
never seen them). The clamp-on for the Gran Sport shifters have a threaded stud rather than Nuovo record that a simulated boss the same as the braze-on they also attach to. In order to use the Gran Sport style, all that was necessary was to install a threaded stud into the turban and screw it into the braze-on boss. The pressure it exerted on the internal parts of the shifter appears to be about the same as the bolts, as the shifters works the same, but I now have the large turban top cap to adjust the tension with.

A Vintage Cyclocross bike; more Campy!

Yes, another multi-gear post. I have been wanting a cyclocross bike for a while, but couldn't decide on a frame of if I wanted it geared. Once I settled on this items, the bike came together in about 2 weeks. While I have considered racing, I just don’t see me voluntarily riding in mud. So the concept was a nicely lugged frame that can take 30mm tires, with Campy Gran Sport (GS) components. Gran Sport components were the sport components during the Nuovo Record (NR) era. They tend to be less finished, but many of the parts are interchangeable and a little more affordable, but due to their scarcity in the US you often have to buy them from a European supplier. The Gran Sport derailleur is built on the same platform of the Nuovo Record and old Super record.

While part of me likes the cohesiveness of a full gruppo, I ended up using some parts I had in the old parts bin including a set of Triomphe brake levers and a (NR) Italian BB (the bike came with NR headset and shifters). Triomphe (and Victory) replaced GS during the C-Record era; post 1984/85). Unless I say differently, most of the parts I acquired for this project were from ebay suppliers.


The first items I looked for was a Gran Sport rear derailleur and I ended up with two, seeing one about to expire for $5. I also had a lot of fun tearing them down and rebuilding them (I enjoyed it so much that I did the same with a NR rear derailleur I had on another bike. It was a good thing to, as the spring was almost rusted solid and need to be replaced; I used the spring out of one of the GS derailleur). Next I started looking for brakes. While I had some Triomphe levers, I was still looking toward a GS gruppo. I was also looking for a crankset. I found a supplier in Poland with GS brake calipers and a very nice crankset.
During this time I also found a supplier that was selling a pair of once mounted never ridden Tipo hubset. Tipo were the hubs used with the GS gruppo. I also found someone selling a Record rear hub where the spokes had been cut with a 13-24 Suntour 6 speed freewheel still attached. It looked like a good bargain for the freewheel and it turned out to be more than that as the hubset had a 120mm rear axle and I needed 126mm, which is what the Record hub had. Interestingly, most of the NR hubs had the same flange spacing, and campy simply used a longer spaced axle to change from 120mm to 126mm. I also I found a frame. It looked to be an early 70’s Italian frame with some beautiful lug work. The chain stays were crimped looked to be able to take 30 mm tires. I actually had bought a set of Kenda 30mm cross tires several years ago and I was happy to able to use them. This build eventually allowed me to use up a lot of parts from the parts bin. One conundrum is figuring out who made it. There is residue from stickers on the downtube and seatube that said "RECORD". To my knowledge Record is not a model of a known Italian bike maker. The best information I got was the frame may have been made for a bike shop, specifically Palo Alto Bicycles. I did some looking into Palo Alto Bicycles and found they had several supposed suppliers, , so this is definitely a Biemmezeta and Romani. While the Biemmezeta bikes are easily identified by the initials "BMZ" on the bottom bracket shell, the Romani's are not as easily identified. Since my bike does not have the BMZ identifier, I tried to fine examples of Romani 1970's bicycles. While this was fruitless, I did find some 1980's Romani's and they were very similar in many ways to my frame. For now I'm still searching.

Edit: Well after much searching there is little dobt the bike is a 60's or early 70" Olmo most like made with SL Columbus tubing. Olmo Made some very nice bike and this is certainly one of them. Since the piant appears to be original and shows up on many Olmo vintage bikes, I still have tracked down the history as to why it was not stickered as an Olmo.

As I waited for the brakes and crank, I realized the calipers were the recessed variety and my frame was not drilled for recessed brakes. While it’s a simple matter to drill the fork, trying the same with the rear boss can be problematic, especially with a frame like mine, where the boss is simply a tube welded on the brake arch and the tube diameter looked to be the same as the recessed nut. I was then fortunate enough to find someone selling some standard NR brake posts that would work with my GS calipers. When the brakes came in, I discovered I had another problem; I had bought short reach brakes. The short calipers have a reach of 42 to 52mm and while this was fine for the front, which was right on at 52mm, the rear needed a 55mm, so the rear caliper had too short arms. At this point I could not find any standard reach GS brake calipers, so I ordered a NOS set of Triomphe calipers 52 to 63mm; they even match the levers I have! And of course they were from Hungry. As I write this I’m waiting for Triomphe calipers, while the GS calipers are on ebay.

As far as the bottom bracket goes, I have a used Triomphe but it is British thread and this frame is Italian. I did have a nice used Italian spindle and wouldn’t you know I found a supplier with the cups and bearings for sale. When the cups and bearings arrived I found I could not thread the drive side all the way in. I went to a nearby LBS, Amsterdam Cycles, that has a lot of vintage parts and the owner, Tom had the die to chase the threads. Apparently there are shallow and standard BB cups; it looks like the previous cups were shallow and I had the standard, which left a bunch of gunk on the deeper threads. After Tom was done, there was a lot of sludge and some metal on the die; the cup then screwed in like it was supposed to.

For a stem I found used Aria Japanese stem that I don’t know much about but it does look nice and the handlebar appears to be a Japanese Cinelli 64 knock off.

I had a NOS Gran Sport seatpost I wanted to use, by it was 26.8 and the frame turned out to be 27.2 (the diameter of the seatpost is determined by the ID of the seat tube. Saying this, although the ID was 28.6 (industry standard at the time), the ID can be anywhere from 25mm – 27.2; 27.2 became a newer industry standard. Found a Record post for $20 as the aluminum needed a lot of work and it was missing the lower clamp supports. I then found a supplier that was selling the clamp parts for a NR seatpost so I was set.

While I was at Amsterdam, the owner showed me a Gran Sport “pillbox” front derailleur. Practically every front derailleur you will see will be a parallelogram. However two of the Gran Sport front derailleur were rod actuated; one was hand operated and the other was the pillbox (the hand operated is extremely rare). This pillbox actually works very well and will easily be the oldest part on my bike.


In order to make it ride-able I scavenged a wheelset and a mis-matched set of brakes. The front brake was off the same bike as the wheelset. I converted my Peugeot to a fixed gear and bought a new fixed wheelset. I also replaced the front brake, an older Shimano BR-105 (BR-1050) with a newer 105, as the new wheelset made the older brake too long; it worked great on the project frame’s fork. I also needed a rear brake, which can either be a standard rear or a recessed front (the recessed front caliper has a long enough post to work as a standard rear). What I found was a recessed front Suntour caliper (Cyclone 7000). The Suntour caliper is as high quality as the Shimano 105, but the aluminum was discolored from corrosion. However I have a little experience with cleaning up aluminum which involves 320 grit sandpaper, followed by 400 grit and then some light polishing with a Dremel tool and it buffed out amazingly well (used the same process on the seatpost, again with good/great results).

A near catastrophe occurred on my first ride when I sucked the rear derailleur, meaning when I shifted to the lowest gear, the rear derailleur went right into the wheel spokes and chewed it up like a blender. Fortunately I had another derailleur in the wings that I bought on a whim. Besides a slight wobble in the rear wheel that took 5 minutes to true and a slightly bent hanger that straightened with little effort I actually cheated it out a bit, which is not a big deal with these in-line parallelogram derailleurs), I was back on the road. I'm thinking the cause was a bent backing plate on the derailleur that I forgot to check before I went out for the ride. The second derailleur worked like a charm and I went on a 3 hour ride including about 8 miles of a fire road. This one of the smoothest and comfortable bikes I have ever ridden. It also seems I always get a frame 2mm or 3mm too big and I have grown used to it (I'm 5'10" and the frame is a 57cm). Maybe there is something to some of the Rivendell school of thought.

Things that took longer than expected were; for some reason one of the recesses in the downtube shifters not drilled as deep as it needed to be. I had to drill out the shifter and grind the cable ends (not unusual) to make it work; I already mentioned I had to have the bottom bracket chased. There also the brake housing clamps. Many older frames did not have any braze-ons to hold the brake cable so clamps were used to hold them on. There was already one of the bike and I found two more at Amsterdam. the problem is the nuts and bolts were rusted together. Since the nut is pressed into the clamp, I had to cut it out without destroying the clamp. These nuts are tiny so it was no small chore, but a Dremil tool made it easier. I then replaced them with a small nut and bolt.
While this might not be someone else's idea of a cross bike, it is exactly what I wanted. I still not sure about the Brooks saddle and I have a feeling I will miss the front Shimano BR-1050 and the Suntour brake calipers. I also have some near new Tipo hubs (with a 126mm rear axle) that I hope will be a wheelset someday. However, the Peugeot wheelset is a Shimano/Mavic ala 1985 with a Uniglide freehub. The current cassette is a 13-24, but Uniglide had loose cogs, so I have am going to change the 24T to a 26T for a lower gear (26T is the largest cog the derailleur is rated for).

I've been running my Onespeedbiker for a couple of years, however lately all I have been doing is posting about vintage Campagnolo components and how to make them work. I know there is a lot of information out there about the history of Campagnolo and how their parts work. Therefore I am launching this blog to present my past and future Campy posts.
